Characterization of karstic aquifer complexity using fractal dimensions

Abstract The present study analyzes fractal dimensions for the daily discharge data series of 12 karstic springs registered over two decades in Northeast Hungary. Fluctuation observed is frequent and irregular, producing rough time series. level roughness measured by dimension defined different ways corresponds to intensity fluctuation. That, turn, results from structure aquifer, its conduits’ geometry, water migration them. In given case springs, p-variogram based reflect karstification primarily. On other hand, box-count information are associated with mixing hydrothermal components when latter present. Therefore, analysis spring discharges may provide a way obtain on complexity hidden subsurface conduits flows them an exploratory comprehensive way.
